With a history teaching photography and a passion for thinking outside of the box, Barbara Rose will walk you through tips, fundamentals, and strategies for enhancing creativity though photography!
About Barbara:
Places and their people, cultures, nature, and architecture provide inspiration to create images that evoke emotion and tell stories of locations near and far. I use both stylized and naturalistic artistic approaches to create photographs of what I see as beautiful in the world.
A friend once described my photography as reflecting “magical sensibilities,” which I didn’t initially understand. The meaning of sensibilities is the ability to appreciate and respond to complex emotional or aesthetic influences. The phrase “magical sensibilities” has stuck with me, both as a reminder that photographs are made (not taken) and as a personal goal for my work.
I follow my curiosity and look for “what ifs” when selecting what and when to photograph. (What if I included a reflection of the building across the street on a mannequin in the shop window? What if I wait for a rain shower to coat the cobblestone street? What if I photograph this flower as I would a portrait of a person?) “What ifs” reflect intentionality of choices. And choices—from selecting what and how to photograph to what to do in the real or digital darkroom—are the heart of photography as an art form.
I am one of 14 photographers at the Sugarcreek Photography Gallery in Bellbrook. In the last few years my work has been displayed in eleven art center exhibits and was selected for inclusion in the 2024 Oxford Visual Arts Connections Calendar. I taught photography for Miami University’s Institute for Learning in Retirement and have done art talks and presentations at Sugarcreek Photography Gallery and Dayton’s Tripod Camera Club. Recently completed commercial work includes images for three business websites, event photographer for 20+ events in 2023, and environmental portraits in New Orleans and Ohio.
